…with a couple of perfect Kentucky Derby roses! They weren’t omens or anything, because in spite of my month of studying, my handicapping most definitely did not come up smelling like a rose.
The key, we have learned, is showing up before it actually starts. The early bird makes off with the goods.
A terrifyingly large staghorn fern…looks like an alien life form with bad intentions.

If you’re in Southern California and haven’t been there, you should go. It’s cheap and one of our underrated gems.

Walking out into the yard in the morning and being greeted with this sight…a gift is exactly what it is.

This guy, taking his sweet time…
Mr. Crook, our resident #1 Western fence lizard. You can tell it’s him because of the kink in his tail, the fact that he’s big for his species, and the direct, sassy eye contact he gives you. My day is made when I see this guy.

There was more, I just wasn’t organized enough to take good photos. We had geraniums, and freesias, and white roses. And the cabbage plants were putting out yellow flowers. Use your imagination.
